It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to reality when it begins to drift away from its original location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers underneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and therefore tend to be more resistant to tangles than earlier models. They're also taller than previous rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches with low sides, and they're designed to allow this model to move more easily on varying flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other models with a higher-end price tag however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera to spot particles of dirt embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous version which relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room and clean the area three times, at different angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on the low pile carpet was very good and it also scored a high score on mid pile too. It did a good job collecting pet hair, but had a difficult time with the thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's even nearly as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It's got plenty of features that we'd like to find in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration are found in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and pull tab from its undercarriage you simply plug it into the wall socket or one of its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to its dock when it is running out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicator lights on top that show when its bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses Wi-Fi.
