One of the things I enjoyed about this novel was how well Heyer contrasted Leonie's raunchy ways with Avon's cool planning and reticence. Her impulsive physical reactions and blood-lust stand in stark contrast to his calm and collected manner. I also enjoyed the way he was able to defeat the villain without threatening him or chasing him. Instead, he employed insinuation.

Another thing that I really loved about this book was how Heyer subtilly highlighted the limitations of women's lives during this time. Leonie isn't happy trading in her breeches for layers of skirts and petticoats, she isn't a fan of riding side-saddle, and is always shooting at villains to death (even though it's a dangerous job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her rebellious behavior at first, Avon soon realizes that she is his favorite.

It was a little difficult to keep track of at first, as Heyer calls the Duke various names on the initial pages. Once you get it figured out the book becomes easier to understand. This book was fantastic and I would highly recommend it. If you're a lover of Georgette Heyer or simply enjoy a good romance, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Avon's Relationship with Davenant
