About Avon Publishing

Avon Books was founded by the American News Corporation in 1941 as a competitor of Pocket Books. They published diverse genres initially. They entered the field of romance with Kathleen Woodiwiss's 1972 novel The Flame and the Flower following which they became a powerhouse in the industry. Avon shifted its focus on romance following Newscorp acquired Hearst's publishing division in 1999 and merged it with Harper Collins. Avon is now an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin.

Avon began by publishing digest-sized paperbacks, such as Avon Western Reader or Avon Science Fiction Reader. They also published a few comic books. Joseph Meyers hired a staff of highly experienced and well-connected editors which included Donald A. Wollheim, whose science fiction and fantasy tales are highly sought-after by collectors.

As a paperback publisher Avon was one of the first to realize that women were a large and untapped market for its books. Sales agents employed by the company were mostly middle-class women and therefore, Avon sought to appeal to women with books that were both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.

Avon created a line of books that featured contemporary works by authors who aren't often represented in the paperback market. The titles included Avon Bard, which featured translated books by Latin American authors such as Marcio Souza and Joao Guimaraes Rosa. In 1987 the Avon Bard imprint was merged with the more well-established Avon Camelot & Discus imprints.

Following the merger, Avon focused solely on romance, and moved its non-romance hardcovers and paperbacks over to Morrow which is a sister company. This means that Avon's books are less expensive than other publishers', and the company has earned its reputation based on quality and value for money.

Even though Avon has faced its fair share of scandals, including lawsuits brought by victims of sexual harassment, the business remains profitable and is an important player in the online marketplace. Avon is also committed to social responsibility and supports breast cancer research as well as domestic violence initiatives.

About Avon Fiction

Avon Books was founded in 1941 as a paperback publisher. It is one of the oldest publishers in the world. The publisher was initially owned by the American News Corporation and founded as a competitor to Pocket Books. Contrary to the more literary Pocket series, the Avon paperbacks that were pocket-sized in the early years focused on popular appeal and contained ghost stories, sexually explicit love stories, and fantasy novels. Hearst bought the Avon company in the year 1959.

The 1970s were a decade of romance for Avon with multiple blockbuster titles that made it onto bestseller lists. Kathleen Woodiwiss's Shanna spent 33 weeks on the list and was followed by sexy novels by newcomers Rosemary Rogers and Elizabeth Lowell. The covers for Avon's sexy romances were lurid and featured men sporting arousing bosoms.

Avon published a monthly romance book that was marketed as "Avon Romance Treasure" and featured a gorgeous front cover that read "clinch". Famous authors such as Brenda Joyce and Susan Wiggs were published under this banner.

After the digital age exploded, Avon launched a special electronic book edition every month that was designated as an "Avon Impulse" title. The e-books could be purchased for purchase at all major online retailers. The imprint made it possible for readers to purchase a hardcover copies of the book with print-on demand technology.

Avon is now an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Avon Impulse, a digital imprint, was launched recently to help develop new talent in the e-book industry. Avon Impulse launches next week with a short story in digital format from author Katherine Ashe, and multiple titles are planned for each month. The e books will be accessible on all major online retailers, and users can buy them with the ease they purchase ebooks on Amazon, B&N and others. The ebooks will be available both in Kindle and Nook format.

About Avon Non-Fiction

Avon Publications began as a paperback publisher in 1941 and is known for its pioneering work in the genre of historical romance. HarperCollins is the current imprint and publishes the best commercial fiction.

Avon began publishing romance novels in 2010 in both mass market paperbacks as well as hardcover versions. Their books span a wide range of genres, and boast some of the top authors in historical and contemporary fiction.

This is a great prequel to the character Kerr Avon from Blake's 7 (BBC sci-fi from the 1980s). The author does a fantastic job of emulating the bantering style of dialogue that the series is so famous for and there are plenty of sexually explicit scenes to keep the reader entertained however, this book is intended for fans of the show only and would not be appreciated by anyone who isn't.

Few historians have been as kind to corporations as Manko has been to Avon and she demonstrates how even a large successful company can be plagued by blind spots, slow responses poor decisions, and ineffective management. Her meticulous research and shrewd understanding of business operations will be a surprise to many readers.

It's hard to classify the importance of Avon in the evolution of the romance genre but it's definitely in the same league as Mills & Boon and Harlequin. They invented the bodice ripper and created a group of authors which included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and a host of others. The covers were more attractive and the heroines started to have more sexual experience than just sleeping with the hero.

Avon also published a lot of fantasy and science fiction. It was published in digest format - around the size and shape of a modern short story magazine - which made them very popular. Collectors love a few of these.

The company published a number reprints, original works by contemporary writers, and some of the most famous authors from the past. The company also published a large amount of literature for children but this has decreased in recent years. Most of these were spooky tales or fairytales with moral messages, but certain of them were just to entertain.
